Competing In DARPA Challenge
2022 update: I found out that the DARPA Robotic's challenge was actually a one and done event
apparently never to be repeated again. They do other challenges now and no longer host humanoid
robot challenges. This is unfortunate to the utmost because it would have been cool to compete
in it in the future. But who knows, they might throw another one some day. So I'll leave this
post up just in case...
It would be a huge honor and achievement to compete in the
DARPA robotics challenge (DARPA=Defense Advanced
Research Projects Agency). This is an annual challenge where the best robots in the world compete to
win amazing prizes! The robot must undergo a series of tests and obstacles ranging from carrying
objects from point a to point b, climbing stairs, driving a vehicle, crossing over a pile of bricks,
etc. It would be super challenging to get my robot able to conquer the many challenges they require
you to do, however, it would be well worth it for the possibilties for collaborations, networking
opportunities, prize money, possible investors or patrons you may meet, etc. On the downside, the
DARPA challenge of today will probably be 10x easier than the DARPA challenge in 10 or 20 years from
now, by then they might require your robot to pole vault and do backflips! Hopefully my robot will
be good enough but we shall see! I can only dream!
As a side note, I'd also be interested in competing in other robotics expositions or challenges all around
the world for the same reasons as mentioned above. More publicity means more funding, fans, networking,
exchange of tips and information, etc. So any type of competition for robotics would be a huge draw for me.
